PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX - January 1 - May 1

Patrick County taxes vehicles (cars, trucks, motorcycles, motor homes, trailers, semi-trailers, boats, and aircraft). Citizens of the county owning these items on January 1 of any year are responsible for listing them with the office of the Commissioner of the Revenue between January 1 and May 1. Patrick County assesses all property located in the county as of January 1. Personal Property taxes are not prorated.

Patrick County levies a tax on tangible personal property used in a trade or business (such as furniture, fixtures, machinery and tools, and merchants' capital) located in the county on January 1. A return must be filed with the Commissioner of the Revenue on or before May 1 of each year. Businesses must itemize their personal property and/or equipment, stating the date of purchase for each item and original purchase price.

REAL ESTATE TAX:

All property is subject to taxation except that which is specifically exempt by the CODE OF VIRGINIA. Property is assessed to the owner of record on January 1 each year.

 

STATE INCOME TAX:

The Commissioner of the Revenue will assist in preparing Virginia State Income tax returns.

FORMS:

The Commissioner's Office has most Federal, State, and local tax forms available upon request by individuals. Bulk forms must be obtained elsewhere.

COUNTY DECALS: March 1 - April 30

New county decals go on sale March 1 each year and must be purchased by April 30. All Personal Property Taxes must be paid before a decal can be issued. A decal application, registration card, temporary registration or title for each vehicle must be presented when purchasing decals. Decals may be purchased by mail by sending the decal application, registration card, temporary registration or title for each vehicle and a check or money order to the Treasurer's Office. DECALS ARE NOT SOLD AT ANY OTHER LOCATION.

DOG TAGS: November I - January 31

All dogs four (4) months or older must receive a rabies vaccination. Dog tags go on sale November 1 and must be on the dog by February 1. A current rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed veterinarian must be presented when purchasing a dog. To purchase dog tags by mail, send the rabies vaccination certificate for each dog and a check to the Treasurer's Office.

PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES: Date Due - December 5
REAL ESTATE TAXES: Date Due - December 5

Personal Property and Real Estate Taxes are due December 5 each year. A 5% penalty plus 10% per annum interest added to all unpaid taxes on December 6. Real Estate Taxes are usually prorated when real estate is sold, but this is a matter to be settled at the time of sale between the purchaser and the seller. Real Estate is assessed in the name of the owner of record as of January 1.

Personal Property and Real Estate Tax statements are mailed by the first of October and are payable in the Treasurer's Office. Taxes may be paid by mailing the statements and a check or money order to the Treasurer's Office.
